Two businessmen, Matt Rossman and Bruce Studer, have been gaining momentum for a proposed casino at the Wood Village Park greyhound track in Multnomah County, just 12 miles from Portland, Oregon.
The two backers have been pushing for the project for years, but need the necessary signatures to amend the constitution to allow for a private casino. A total of 116,284 signatures are needed for the constitutional measure and an additional 87,213 are required for consideration of their Wood Village project.
So far, the two have spent $909,000 in total to collect over 112,000 and 105,000 signatures, respectively, in just over two months of campaigning. They have until July 6 to collect the remaining signatures before the measures go to a vote.
In 2010, the two men were able to get the measure a vote, but were only able to get 32 percent of voters to support the project. Rossman and Studer are more optimistic this time around, after altering their measure to include the possibility of additional local ownership of their casino and entertainment complex.
There are nine tribal casinos located throughout the state, which are operated by individual Native American tribal councils. However, there are no casino properties located in the Portland area.
