Nevada Gaming Committee To Discuss Online Poker Wednesday In Las Vegas

Panel Wants Some Language Cleaned Up In 2011 Online Poker Bill

Nevada’s 11-member Gaming Policy Committee, headed by Gov. Brian Sandoval, will meet Wednesday in Las Vegas to discuss recommendations for the 2013 legislative session on the issue of real-money online poker.

The main suggestion will likely come in the form of removing some language from Assembly Bill 258, the legislation that forced the adoption of online poker regulations.

The law currently has a provision that says Nevada must wait for a federal bill or Department of Justice authorization to begin intrastate activity (likely in early 2013). A federal clarification of the Wire Act last year is considered to have given the OK, but Nevada regulators mentioned at the last Committee meeting that they want to make sure there’s no impediment going forward.

“In all due respect, Governor, I don’t think you’re going to get a [DoJ] letter saying you can do whatever you want,” Commission Chairman Peter Bernhard said in June.

The Committee will also discuss a handful of other possible recommendations, which include the strengthening of post-licensing regulatory standards for web poker companies. So far, two businesses have received their respective licenses for card playing in cyberspace, with a third (Shuffle Master) coming Thursday after Gaming Commission approval.

After Wednesday, the Committee will have met four times this year. Prior to its March gathering, the panel hadn’t convened in nearly 30 years. The pressing issue of Internet gaming, which is also being taken up by other states, prompted its resurrection.

There will likely be just one more meeting before the Committee’s work is sent to lawmakers for 2013. However, whatever the Committee recommends isn’t binding.
