Les Fenton topped a field of 1,954 in the six-day £100 + £20 buy-in Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) Goliath for a payday of £31,210 (post-deal), plus a seat in the GUKPT Champion of Champions.

Going into the day with almost a third of the chips in play, it took less than five hours for the final table to finish up as players battled it out for the upper end of the £200,000 prize pool. On a side note, 25 percent of the event’s registration fees went to Marie Curie Cancer Care, a charity with long-term links to both Grosvenor and Coventry City Football Club.

Fenton, a 30-year-old architect from St. Albans, was relentless and only lost the chip lead for a brief period to final opponent Mark Harding. At the start of the heads up, Fenton had 30 million to Harding’s 18 million, and in just one hand the giant event was over.

Fenton raised to 1,000,000 with ADiamond Suit 10Spade Suit, Harding shoved with ASpade Suit 7Diamond Suit and Fenton made the call. The board was dealt JSpade Suit 8Club Suit 8Heart Suit 9Heart Suit 7Heart Suit giving the architect a straight and sending Harding out in second place, for £26,610.

The final two players had done a deal, which guaranteed them £26,610 each. They were playing for the Champion of Champion’s seat and the £4,600 that Grosvenor added to the prize pool, which when all was said and done went Fenton’s way.

Following his victory, Fenton described how he felt, “Good. Really good. It’s about time. I’ve entered a few big ones but I haven’t really gone deep for a while, not since my last final table GUKPT Luton 2010] but fortunately it’s finally come round.”

Here are the final table results and payouts:
