This Tuesday night, CBS will debut their new show Vegas, a drama set in 1960s Las Vegas that focuses on a rodeo cowboy-turned lawman’s struggle with the incoming mafia.
Real-life Ralph Lamb, who served as Clark County’s Sheriff from 1961-1979, is played by actor Dennis Quaid, who will battle it out each week with fictional mobster Vincent Savino, played by Michael Chiklis.
Though there’s no guarantee for historical accuracy on the show, the 1960s are widely regarded as Las Vegas’ wildest decade. Gambling had been more or less limited to downtown, but the city began to expand after several mobsters such as Charles “Lucky” Luciano, Meyer Lansky, Johnny Roselli and Frank Costello began to use their influence to build large casino properties on the Strip.
The popular casino resorts on the Strip at that time were La Concha, The Sands, The Sahara, The Hacienda, New Frontier, The Stardust and The Dunes, none of which are operational today. On Vegas, Chiklis’ character runs the fictional Savoy casino, though there was a Club Savoy that operated downtown in the 1940s and 1950s before it was taken over by Binions Horseshoe.
The show, shot in California and New Mexico, will also star Carrie-Ann Moss as Assistant District Attorney Katherine O’Connell, Jason O’Mara as Lamb’s brother Jack Dixon and Taylor Handley as Lamb’s son.
In interviews, Quaid has stated that he has leaned on Lamb, now 85, to assist him with his character development.
The pilot episode airs Tuesday night at 10/9c.
