French online poker site Winamax is setting itself up to offer real-money games in America in the future.

The site recently announced a play-money version of its cash games and tournaments for those living in the States, and is attempting to create the experience of real-money gaming in its free poker offer.

A statement on the site includes the following:

“Winamax offers both play money games and real money games to poker fans. However, unlike some, we have chosen to offer real-money games only in regulated markets, where so doing is both safe and legal…

“Because real money poker is currently not authorized in the United States, we have put together a play money offer designed to encourage real poker play and offer an experience as close to the real thing as possible. One advantage of play for fun poker is that it is totally free. No need to purchase chips. Just create an account, download our software, and join a game.

“Should online real money poker ever become legal in your area, we may be opening up our real money rooms to players, and you would be able to enjoy the full online poker experience. Until then, you can enjoy our play for free cash games and poker tournaments and test your skill against thousands of real players.”

Players will receive 50 chips to start and reloads are limited to two per day in order to encourage bankroll management. There are games of various levels, allowing players to move up stakes as they would in real-money poker. Plus in sticking to its real-money simulation, a free chip rake will be collected on the cash game tables and a commission on tournaments.
