Former Sportingbet Chairman Dicks Free To GoQueens Judge Clears Path for Dicks |

Friday marked the return to a Queens courtroom for former Sportingbet chairman Peter Dicks. Previously arrested in New York on a warrant issued in Louisiana, Dicks' case has garnered international attention and tremendous speculation in the gaming marketplace as stocks dipped due to his detainment.
Fortunately for Dicks, who was arrested at Kennedy International Airport on Sept. 6, 2006, New York Gov. George Pataki refused to enforce the extradition attempts by Louisiana, stating that because offshore Internet gambling is not a crime in the state of New York, he could not sign the warrant extraditing Dicks.
In a recent BusinessWeek article, Pataki spokeswoman Jessica Scaperotti explained Pataki's logic: "The governor does support the effort to restrict illegal offshore gaming but he does not have the legal authority to extradite Mr. Dicks."
With the extradition no longer enforceable, Judge Gene Lopez declared Dicks free and clear of any legal ramifications in New York after a short hearing. Dicks is set to return home to England this weekend while his attorney, Barry Slotnick will now focus his attention on getting Louisiana to also drop their charges against Dicks.
