'Frankenstorm' Sandy Puts Atlantic City Under Water

Hurricane Has Forced Evacuation And Closing Of Casinos

As Atlantic City braces for the brunt of Hurricane Sandy, considered to be a super storm capable of inflecting massive damage, its already battered casino industry has suffered another blow.

The gambling destination survived Hurricane Irene in 2011 without any serious structural damage. However, it cost the city’s casinos tens of millions of dollars collectively.

The storms have come at a time when increased casino competition in the region — in states such as Pennsylvania — has hurt Atlantic City’s overall revenue figures.

Irene was the third time in the city’s history that all of its casinos shut down. Sandy is the fourth.

According to reports this week on Hurricane Sandy, Atlantic City has already experienced heavy flooding from what is being dubbed “Frankenstorm,” not long after Gov. Chris Christie ordered its residents to evacuate on Sunday.

“The city’s basically flooded,” Willie Glass, Atlantic City’s public safety director, told the Associated Press. “Most of the city is under water.”

As of around 3 p.m. EST, the storm was still barreling down on the city, with the worst, in terms of wind speeds and rain, reportedly still to come later in the day.
