A nun in Orleans County, N.Y. is in hot water for allegedly stealing $128,000 from two churches.

The Buffalo News reported that authorities believe the funds were spent gambling.

Sister Mary Anne Rapp, hit with a felony charge, appeared in court Monday.

According to the Associated Press, Rapp spent 9 1/2 months receiving in-patient treatment for a gambling addiction and is still in recovery.

The Buffalo News reported that Rapp was placed on administrative leave last year after an audit raised red flags about the fiances of the two churches where she worked.

The investigation reportedly determined that the alleged theft occurred from 2006-10.

“This is a difficult time for all of us,” Sister Edith Wyss, a minister who knows the defendant, told the Associated Press, “especially those of us who have lived and worked with Sister Mary Anne for her nearly 50 years in our community.”
