Poker pro Greg Merson, winner of the World Series of Poker main event about a month ago, has even more reason to be feeling on top of the world right now. The Maryland native announced on his Twitter Monday that he officially has been sober for a full year.

Merson told Card Player that he battled addictions to a slew of drugs before making himself undergo a painful detoxification process in a Las Vegas hotel room late last year. Merson said that he’s “lucky to be alive” after all that he has been through.

After the main event win, Merson declined a drink when offered one from a person in the crowd.

Stan Merson, his father, said on the morning of his son’s victory that the family “won’t permit his head getting too big” and that he has a great support system of friends.

Christian Harder, one of Merson’s good friends, is also confident that he will stay sober, telling Card Player in September that Merson “sees how well he’s doing when he’s clean and realizes how much better he feels,” adding that he has only succeeded at cards when drug-free.
