Remi Castaignon has won the PokerStars European Poker Tour Deauville main event taking down €770,000 for topping the field of 782 runners.
The Frenchman started the day as massive chip leader in the €5,300 buy in tournament with almost double the next biggest stack at the table and despite an early setback which saw him lose most of his chips his resilience came to the fore and he knocked a couple of players out en route to his heads up dual with Walid Dou Habib from Lebanon.
Heads up saw both players with deep stacks but the Lebanese shipped all his chips into the middle after a re-raise an hour into play with K 8 and the Frenchman called with pocket three’s which clung on for a narrow yet ultimately emphatic win.
Castaignon said after his victory,“I played my game and always believed in myself. Even after the hand with pocket fives I carried on believing and played my game.”
Runner-up Bou-Habib from Lebanon added, “Really, I tried my best heads-up; I didn’t catch any hands. I’ve played a lot of EPTs and this is the first time I have gone so far and played a final table. I’m quite happy. It’s quite an achievement.”
Castaignon and Bou-Habib were both catapulted into the top 10 in the Player of the Year race at fourth and joint fifth place respectively.
