Although hockey season just began, this Sunday will be a poker night in Canada.
That's the day Canada's first-ever World Poker Tour tournament begins and it's already completely sold out. Three-hundred players put up the $2,500 Canadian to play at Fallsview Casino in Niagra, Ontario, including Canada's most well-known poker players, Toronto native Daniel Negreanu, 2005 WPT Player of the Year Gavin Smith, and French Canadian Isabelle Mercier.
It's a homecoming of sorts for these three players and the WPT is thrilled to have Canada's elite join with locals and US players.
"It is certainly fitting that these three, who have risen to prominence on the WPT, are coming home to pay tribute to the millions of Canadian poker fans who have watched them become worldwide celebrities on their TV sets. Daniel, Gavin, and Isabelle's participation in this ground-breaking WPT event represents the importance of establishing an event that Canadians can call their own," said WPTE CEO and founder Steve Lispcomb in a recent press release.
Beginning Oct. 22, and running through Oct. 24, the event's final table will take place October 30, 2006.
Please note, this event is not the $10,000 WPT North American Poker Championship which is also being held at Fallsview. WPT is still accepting entries to this event.
