Paul Klann has emerged victorious in the 2013 World Poker Tour L.A. Poker Classic $10,000 main event, earning $1,004,090 and 2,100 Card Player Player of the Year points. As a result, the 41-year-old from Richmond, British Columbia has been catapulted into a tie for second place in the POY race with Aussie Millions champion Mervin Chen.
Klann is an amateur player with five years of poker experience, but the disaster restoration company owner managed to top a tough and sizable field in what his only his fourth WPT event. Klann overcame experienced tournament pro Paul ‘paulgees81’ Volpe heads-up for the title.
After a lengthy playdown from six-handed to heads-up, the two battled back and forth, with Volpe holding the lead for much of the match and stretching his advantage as far as 5-to-1. But Klann doubled his 10 big blind stack, and grinded back to near even when the key pot arose. With blinds at 150,000-300,000 and 50,000 antes, Klann min-raised to 600,000. Volpe moved all-in for 8 million, having Klann covered by only two big blinds. Klann made the call with the K10 and found himself ahead of Volpe’s J9. The board ran out 432Q6, giving Klann a roughly 25-to-1 chip lead. On the next hand it was all over, with Klann claiming the title when his queen-high bested Volpe’s ten-high. Volpe earned $651,170 and 1,750 POY points for his runner-up finish.
Volpe wasn’t the only experienced pro at this final table. Klann also had to outlast tournament circuit notables Jesse Yaginuma (3rd – $429,810), Daniel Fuhs (4th – $316,650) and Toby Lewis (6th – $193,560). Eighth-place finisher David Tuthill fell short of the televised final table, but the recent World Series of Poker Circuit Caesars Palace main event champion earned $128,550 and 350 POY points, climbing to 17th place in the POY race.
