Wynn Resorts One Of 37 Firms To Apply For New Jersey Online Gambling License: Report

Casino Boss Doesn't Have Any Properties There, So Would Likely Partner

Steve Wynn reportedly is getting serious about online gambling in New Jersey. The Garden State legalized online betting this year and plans to have some state-sanctioned games debut this fall.

Press of Atlantic City reported that Wynn’s Wynn Interactive LLC is one of the 37 firms that the state said applied by an early deadline to be involved with the industry.

Wynn has ties to Atlantic City but is currently not a casino owner there. As a result, he would need to partner with an existing brick-and-mortar casino license in New Jersey in order to be able to offer games — or build. Only Revel Casino-Hotel and the Atlantic Club Casino Hotel are without partners. The city has 12 properties.

Wynn was last a casino owner in New Jersey in the late 1980s. He sold the Golden Nugget in 1987 for $440 million, using the money to build his casino empire in the Mojave Desert.

Wynn has properties most notably in Las Vegas and Macau, and is planning on building a massive casino near Boston and one near Philadelphia, if state regulators in both locations approve the respective plans. The odds look good.

New Jersey regulators have been hush on which companies have applied to be involved with online gambling, deciding to wait until they receive regulatory approval. However, information has come out related to some of the firms, and Wynn is one of them.

Wynn, 71, is one of the casino industry’s iconic figures. Unlike his rival Sheldon Adelson, Wynn has embraced the idea of gambling on the web.

New Jersey’s industry would be intrastate at first, just like how Nevada’s currently is, but both those states are looking to partner up to create greater liquidity. Wynn is an online gambling licensee in the Silver State, but hasn’t offered any games there yet.

Here is a look at who has partnered with who so far in Atlantic City for web gambling:

Caesars Entertainment Corp. — 888 Holdings
Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa — Bwin.Party Digital Entertainment
Resorts Casino Hotel — PokerStars
Golden Nugget Atlantic City — Bally Technologies
Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort — Ultimate Gaming
Tropicana Casino and Resort — Gamesys
