Nevada could be on pace to break its visitor record which it set just last year.
According to a Thursday report by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, 24.4 million people have so far arrived this year into the city via the sky, which is almost the exactly the same as the same seven-month span last year.
In 2012, nearly 40 million people flew into Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport, which was an all-time high. The previous record of 39.2 million had been set in 2007, before the Great Recession struck and severely hurt the economy.
Many in the industry see Las Vegas as well into its own recovery after the nationwide financial crisis. According to the American Gaming Association, the brick-and-mortar casino industry won a record $37.34 billion from gamblers in 2012, which was another great sign.
The Silver State is home to a more than $10 billion-a-year gambling market, and a couple of years ago legalized online games. Nevada saw a real-money online poker site — Ultimate Poker — first offer real-money games this spring.
Such games are only available to those physically within the state’s borders. It remains to be seen whether full-fledged online gambling could help increase Nevada’s tourism figures.
Though, gaming firms have long said that they will use online gambling, including free-to-play games that are available to people globally, to try to entice customers to gamble in a real-life setting. Many of these web games will be marketed as a risk-free way to learn a new game before trying it for real-money around a bunch people on a gaming floor.
Nevada is home to a population of 2.759 million.
