Proposal Still Needs To Be Cleared By Residents

The Mohegan Sun Tribal Gaming Authority announced Thursday that it has reached a host community agreement with the town of Palmer, Massachusetts.

The casino group would provide the town with more than $16 million in annual payments.

The deal must be approved by the town council, the Management Board of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority and by residents in a referendum. All of those are expected soon.

However, before the casino could ever be under construction, state gaming regulators would have to give the final OK in the form of a license. Only three full-scale Las Vegas-style casinos are allowed to be built under a law that passed a couple of years ago.

“More than four years ago we began building a relationship with the great community of Palmer. Today I am happy to say we have forged a genuine partnership to bring jobs, economic growth and a new visitor economy to this town and the entire region,” Mitchell Etess, CEO of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority said in a statement.

“We are confident this host community agreement, combined with our nearly $1 billion proposal, will deliver the very best for Palmer and Massachusetts.”

In addition to a gaming floor, the property would include two hotels, a 70,000 square foot water park and 300,000 square feet of entertainment, dining and fashion retail.
