Gaming revenue figures released this week show that Macau casinos won 28.96 billion patacas ($3.63 billion) from gamblers in the month of September.
That amount marked a 21.4-percent gain compared to September 2012.
According to Retuers, analysts had predicted gains of 22-25 percent.
October reportedly is expected to likely break the record for gaming revenue in a single month, as a week-long national holiday begins soon.
The record of $3.92 billion was set in March of this year.
Macau, the only place in China were gambling is legal, has 35 casinos. Nevada has vastly more casinos and took in $10.8 billion in gaming revenue last year. Macau snagged $38 billion.
Here’s a look at Macau’s year so far:
January: $3.4 billion
February: $3.39 billion
March: $3.92 billion
April: $3.54 billion
May: $3.7 billion
June: $3.54 billion
July: $3.7 billion
August: $3.88 billion
September: $3.63 billion
Casinos in Macau make most of their money from obscenely wealthy high rollers. These “whales” typically come from mainland China. While they usually are the favorites for the casinos, sometimes they cause trouble. Recently, Wynn Resorts, one of Nevada’s top firms, filed suit against a Macau high roller for not repaying his $1.81 million debt.
Many of the same firms do business in both Las Vegas and Macau.
