Maryland’s Rocky Gap Casino Resort opened its brand new poker room Friday.

The move comes after state voters authorized live dealer table games last year and after other Maryland casinos opened their respective poker rooms to much fanfare.

Rocky Gap’s room is three tables and offers both limit and no-limit hold’em.

In addition to poker, Rocky Gap operates 558 slot machines and 10 banking table games. Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency Director Stephen Martino recently signed the operations license allowing the casino to add poker tables to its gaming floor.

Rocky Gap opened in May of this year.

Maryland casinos generated $65.3 million in gaming revenue during September, with Maryland Live raking in about $50 million of that total.

While the existing casinos in the state solidify their respective businesses, construction is underway for a fifth casino in the state. Caesars Entertainment Corp. is opening up a property in Baltimore and there is expected to be a WSOP-branded poker room in it.

In addition, giants MGM Resorts International and Penn National Gaming are vying for authorization to build a Las Vegas-style casino resort in Prince George’s County. That decision is expected to come by the state in the next several months.

The largest poker room in Maryland, right now, belongs to Maryland Live. It opened its 52-table room in late August and has seen very strong revenue from those tables.

The first casino in the state to offer live poker was Hollywood Casino Perryville.

The gambling expansion efforts in Maryland come as other states in the region are also revamping their casino businesses. Competition for gambling clientele is fierce.
