New York Casino Protesters Smash Slot MachineGambling Expansion Plan Is On The Nov. 5 Ballot |

Opponents to the state of New York’s plans to open up multiple Las Vegas-style commercial casinos upstate took to smashing a slot machine in Albany this week in protest.
Activists took turns leveling blows with a sledge hammer against the machine, according to The Saratogian. Proposition 1, which voters will have a say on, would allow for a massive increase in the presence of gambling within the Empire State.
Protesters reportedly were primarily speaking out against slot machines, but those are a huge part of casino revenue.
The measure goes to voters on Nov. 5.
“One problem we face is there has not been a single public hearing on this issue,” David Blankenhorn of the Institute for American Values, a think tank in NYC, told The Saratogian. “We’re being asked to change our constitution. There has not been a single public hearing. Gov. Cuomo has not given a single substantive speech. There have been no independent studies. They say it promotes the economy, (but) there is not a single study that says that.”
Despite the opposition right now, the measure looks like it will pass. However, some are working hard to change that in the final few weeks.
Right now, New York just has tribal casinos and racinos.
Some casino heavyweights were hoping for the chance to build in New York City, but that opportunity is off the table for now.
