The 2013 World Series of Poker Europe €5,300 mix-max no-limit hold’em event drew a total of 140 entrants, building a prize pool of €672,000. The eventual champion was France’s Darko Stojanovic, who earned his first gold bracelet, the €188,160 ($253,847 USD) first-place prize and 576 Card Player Player of the Year points for the win.
This event features a novel format in which the tournament starts with nine handed play, then shifted to six handed play on day two. Once the final 16 was reached, the tournament again changed table size to four players. The final four faced off in heads-up matches, carrying their chips from found handed play into their randomly-drawn pairings. The winner of each semi-final advanced to the final heads-up showdown.
When the tournament shifted to heads-up play American pro Dan O’Brien held 1.4 million of the roughly 2.1 million chips in play. He was able to quickly overcome Jason Mann (T3rd – €62,770) to set up the final match with Stojanovic, who topped Noah Schwartz (T3rd – €62,770). O’Brien brought a 3-to-1 chip advantage into the final pairing, but that lead was quickly erased on the second hand of their match.
With a flop of 843 Stojanovic had checked and O’Brien bet 25,000. Stojanovic raised to 90,000 and O’Brien called. The turn brought the 2 and Stojanovic quickly moved all-in for just over 400,000. O’Brien tank called with the 77 only to get shown the 32 for a turned two pair for Stojanovic. The river brought the 2 to give Stojanovic a full house and essentially even their chip counts.
From that point on it was a back and forth battle, but Stojanovic was able to pull ahead. On the final hand O’Brien got all-in with the A5 for the nut flush draw against Stojanovic’s 77 on a Q64. The turn brought the J leaving O’Brien needing an ace or a heart to stay alive. The 8 sealed the deal, sending the pot and the title to Stojanovic. O’Brien earned €116,280 ($156,873 USD) and 480 POY points for his runner-up finish.
