This week, in addition to crowning a main event champion, the WSOP named its first ever “Online Nine” champion. It was the Nevada poker site’s first official championship.
Matt Wilson, hailing from North Richmond Hills, Texas, won the $50,000 top prize after a live heads-up match at the Penn and Teller Theater in the Rio in Las Vegas.
In order to qualify for the live sit-and-go, Wilson won an online championship event at WSOP.com.
The WSOP launched its online poker site in September.
Wilson defeated Matt Schultz, from South Dakota, in about an hour-long duel.
Thanks to the victory, Wilson now has more than $100,000 in career poker tournament scores.
The nine-event series kicked off Oct. 25 with a $100,000 freeroll and wrapped up Nov. 2 with the $200+$15 buy-in Internet main event. The tournament schedule also featured two rebuy tournaments and buy-ins from as little as $25+$2.50.
The nine winners of these events made up the Online Nine, which competed in the special $100,000 online sit-and-go freeroll on Nov. 4. The final two players stopped before heads-up play and resumed action at the final table of WSOP main event at the Penn and Teller Theater. The runner-up earned $30,000 and the third-place finisher took home $20,000.
