Former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas took some time out of his schedule this week to make the trip to the Bahamas to compete in the main event of the prestigious PokerStars Caribbean Adventure.
Arenas ponied up the $10,000 to enter Day 1A, but he failed to survive the day. Prior to entering the tournament, he played some cash. According to reports, Arenas was no slouch on the felt.
Though he is no longer in the NBA (not officially retired yet), the 32-year-old, as Sports Illustrated pointed out, “signed a six year, $111 million contract with the Washington Wizards back in 2008, and because the Orlando Magic (who traded for Arenas three years later), restructured the contract, Arenas is getting checks until 2016.”
Arenas recently told TMZ that he’s training for a potential NBA comeback.
He isn’t the only basketball player to make an appearance on the tournament circuit in recent years. Jordan Farmar, Shawn Marion and Paul Pierce have all entered prime-time poker events as well. And then there is the late Jerry Buss, who owned the Lakers and was a familiar face in cash games and tournaments around the country.
