2014 CarbonPoker Card Player Player of the Year Update -- Mustapha Kanit Takes The LeadKeven Stammen Also Moves Inside The Top Five |

The status quo has once again been shaken up in the 2014 Card Player Player of the Year race, sponsored by CarbonPoker. Here is a look at the tournaments that most influenced the overall standings over the past week:
2014 EPT Sanremo / EPT Grand Final Side Events
Italy’s Mustapha Kanit has overtaken the lead in the 2014 POY standings after stringing together a series of final table showings during the final leg of the European Poker Tour. He started off with a runner-up showing in a €2,150 no-limit hold’em prelim at the EPT Sanremo, earning $44,988 and 240 POY points. Just days later he placed fifth in the €10,300 no-limit hold’em high roller, also in San Remo. For that deep run he scored another 250 points and $107,350. Kanit wrapped up his fortnight of final tables with a third-place finish in a €2,200 no-limit hold’em side event at the EPT Grand Final in Monte Carlo for an additional $80,481 and 480 points.
That would be quite a run on it’s own, with 970 points earned and over $200,000 banked. But when you factor in that Kanit started his year off by finishing fourth in the $25,000 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure high roller for $492,600 and 714 points and then went on to win two Aussie Millions prelims for another $260,000 and 1,674 points, it’s easy to see why he has taken over the lead in the overall standings.
2014 World Poker Tour Championship
For the first time in the World Poker Tour’s 12-year history the climactic season-ending WPT Championship was not held at the Bellagio but made the move to the Borgata in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The event also changed it’s buy-in from $25,000 to $15,000 and guaranteed a $5 million prize pool.
A total of 328 players turned out for the inaugural running at the new venue, but in the end only one player was destined to become the newest WPT champion: Keven Stammen. For the win the Ohio native earned $1,350,000 and 1,440 Card Player Player of the Year points. Stammen had already made three final tables this year, including a win in a prelim at the L.A. Poker Classic, and as a result of those scores and this most recent win, Stammen now sits in fourth place in the overall POY standings, with 3,052 total points and $1,610,129 in year-to-date.
