A Look At The Las Vegas Summer Tournament Offerings Outside The WSOP

An Examination of Sin CIty's Packed Schedule of Tournaments Away From The Rio

For many years Las Vegas was the center of the poker tournament universe. With the globalization of the game and the way the industry changed after Black Friday, that has been less true in recent years. But from the last week in May through the middle of July, Las Vegas is undeniably the hottest spot in the world when it comes to poker.

At the center of that is the World Series of Poker but there are numerous huge tournament series on offer at properties around town that offer a variety of buy-ins, games and formats. Locals and visitors alike will have no problem finding whatever form of tournament action they desire. Here is a look at the biggest summer tournament series in Sin City outside of the Rio:

Binion’s Poker Classic

Binion's HorseshoeDates: May 22, ’14 – Jun 25, ’14
Number of events: 30
Main event dates: Jun 18, ’14 – Jun 19, ’14

While the WSOP now takes place just west of the strip, it was founded and was played for more than three decades at Binion’s Horseshoe in downtown Las Vegas. After the series moved to the Rio, Binion’s began to host a new poker tournament series, the 2014 Binion’s Poker Classic.

The 30-event series features buy-ins ranging from as low as $140 to as high as $1,000 for the no-limit hold’em main event, which will kick off on Jun. 18th. Of course there will be numerous standard full-ring, no-limit hold’em events, but there will also be plenty of other games and formats on offer, including H.O.R.S.E., both limit and pot-limit Omaha eight-or-better and Ladies and Seniors events. The historical home of tournament poker certainly has something for everyone this summer.

Golden Nugget’s Grand Poker Series and PPC Golden Nugget Desert Open

Main event dates: Jul 02, ’14 – Jul 03, ’14

The Golden Nugget is another poker powerhouse in downtown Las Vegas, with it’s own huge tournament series kicking off in early June. The 2014 Grand Poker Series features 61 events over a four week period, running the gamut from $125 buy-ins all the way up to the $1,100 no-limit hold’em main event that kicks off at noon on Jul. 2nd.

Not only does the series feature the standard non-hold’em events like H.O.R.S.E. and Omaha eight-or-better, it also has some less common formats like a $230 eight-game mix event, a $125 tag team limit hold’em / Omaha eight-or-better event, a $230 triple stud (featuring razz, seven card stud and stud eight-or-better) and a $230 open face Chinese
poker event.

There will also be three events held over the final weekend of June as part of the Players Poker Championship Golden Nugget Desert Open, highlighted by a $330 no-limit hold’em event beginning on Jun. 29th.

Bellagio Summer High Roller and Bellagio Cup X

The Bellagio Dates: Jun 11, ’14 – Jun 27, ’14, Jul 09, ’14 – Jul 15, ’14

Main event dates: Jul 10, ’14 – Jul 15, ’14

The Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada has awarded more than $ 432 million in tournament payouts in it’s history, the second most of any casino in the world. This week the iconic room announced the schedule for it’s Summer poker tournament offerings.

The $10,300 buy-in Bellagio Cup X no-limit hold’em main event will run from July 10th through the 15th. There will be a $1,080 super satellite on July 9th at noon for players to qualify for the big dance at a fraction of the cost. Registration will remain open until the start of level 12 in the main event, around approximately 3:30 PM local time on Saturday, July 12th. There will also be a $5,180 no-limit hold’em event on Sunday, July 13th beginning at 2:00 PM.

In addition to it’s signature Summer series the Bellagio is also offering a selection of six $10,200 buy-in Summer High Roller events from May. 29th through June 27th. Each of these will be one-day events that begin at noon.

Venetian Deepstack Extravaganza III

The Venetian Las VegasDates: May 22, ’14 – Jul 15, ’14

Main event dates: Jul 12, ’14 – Jul 15, ’14

With 62 events from May 22nd through the 15th of July, the 2014 Deepstack Extravaganza III at Venetian Las Vegas is arguably the largest tournament series outside of the WSOP this summer. The centerpiece of the entire affair is the $1 million guaranteed $5,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em main event which kicks off with the first of two starting days at noon on Jul. 12th. The series features 15 guaranteed-prizepool events, including an $800,000 guaranteed $1,100 no-limit hold’em event, a $75,000 guaranteed $5,000 heads-up event and numerous other no-limit hold’em events.

The series also offers plenty of events for fans of other games, including multiple Omaha events with all of the games most popular variants, from limit Omaha eight-or-better to pot-limit Omaha high. There will also be a $600 ladies no-limit hold’em event, a $600 senior’s event and numerous bounty and survivor events.

Wynn Summer Classic

Wynn Las VegasDates: Jun 11, ’14 – Jul 14, ’14
Number of events: 24
Main event dates: Jul 11, ’14 – Jul 14, ’14

With five guaranteed prizepool events promising over $1 million in payouts and 19 other fantastic tournaments, the 2014 Summer Classic at the Wynn Las Vegas is another fantastic option for players looking for top-tier tournament action. The marquee main event is a $1,600 buy-in no-limit hold’em tournament with a $300,000 guarantee that runs from July 11th through the 14th.

The kickoff $600 senior’s no-limit hold’em event, beginning on Jun. 11th at noon, features a $50,000 guarantee. There are also three separate $250,000 guaranteed $600 buy-in no-limit hold’em events (beginning on Jun. 12th, June 26th and Jul. 3rd), each featuring three starting days.

Orleans Open

The OrleansDates: May 24, ’14 – Jun 02, ’14

Main event dates: Jun 01, ’14 – Jun 02, ’14

The Orleans has long been a favorite of local players and fans of Omaha and other non-hold’em games looking for affordable action. Continuing in that tradition the property is hosting the 2014 Orleans Open, a nine-event tournament series running from May 24th through Jun. 2nd.

The $540 no-limit hold’em main event kicks off on Jun. 1st at 2:00 PM, but there are many other great events on offer as well, including a $225 R.O.S.E. (razz, Omaha 8/OB, stud and stud 8/OB) event and a $330 Omaha eight-or-better event.

Planet Hollywood PHamous Poker Series V

Dates: Jun 06, ’14 – Jul 06, ’14
Number of events: 5
Main event dates: Jun 07, ’14, Jul 05, ’14

With $800,000 in guaranteed prize pools over five events, the 2014 PHamous Poker Series V at Planet Hollywood Las Vegas offers plenty of incentive to head over for some no-limit hold’em action.

The series is book ended by two $560 buy-in $250,000 guaranteed no-limit hold’em events, starting on Jun 7th and Jul. 5th respectively, with three $300 buy-in $100,000 guaranteed events in between.

Aria WPT500

AriaDates: Jul 04, ’14 – Jul 09, ’14
Number of events: 1

The World Poker Tour and Aria Resort & Casino have teamed up for the inaugural WPT500 event, a $565 buy-in no-limit hold’em tournament that features a massive $1 million guarantee, with a top prize of $200,000 or more guaranteed to the winner.

The tournament kicks off with the first of five starting days at noon on Jul. 4th with one re-entry per day permitted, with the survivors of each of the starting days returning on Jul. 9th to play down to a champion.
