“It’s like the first day back at school,” said Daniel Negreanu, excitedly jumping in and out of his seat to greet players as they made their way from the registration desk to the back of the Amazon room where event no. 2, the $25,000 mixed max tournament was being held.
The 2014 World Series of Poker kicked off, of course, with the traditional $500 casino employees event, but all eyes on the rail were fixed on the tournament that drew 131 of the game’s most notable players, including Phil Ivey, Phil Hellmuth, Jason Mercier, Jennifer Tilly, Greg Merson, Phil Galfond, Phil Laak and the aforementioned Negreanu.
A total prize pool of $3,111,250 will be divided up among the final 16 players with a min-cash being worth $54,945 and the winner taking home $871,148.
After an 11-hour day that saw play wrap up around 3 a.m. local time, it was Vanessa Selbst who stood atop the leaderboard of the 60 remaining entrants. She benefited from flopping quads late in the evening to bag up with 562,800 in chips.
Joining Selbst in the overnight top ten are two-time bracelet winner Brian Rast, three-time bracelet winner Michael Mizrachi, high-stakes phenom Dan Cates and five-time bracelet winner John Juanda.
Day 2 action will resume at 2 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.
