31-year-old Tyler Patterson has emerged victorious in the 2014 World Series of Poker $1,500 pot-limit Omaha eight-or-better event, earning his first gold bracelet and the $270,992 first-place prize. The Bellevue, Washington based poker pro was understandably quite pleased to come out on top.

“It means so much. I’m really a glory hog,” he told WSOP.com after play ended. “I honestly can’t say it means more than the cash, because that’s what we play for. But it really means a lo. I like the attention and recognition. I’ve been around for a while, playing cash and some tournaments. Now that I have a gold bracelet, that’s big.”

A total of 991 players posted turned out for this event, building a $1,337,850 prize pool, but after two action packed days of this fast-paced game the field was narrowed down to just eleven players. Among those who survived were a number of notables including four-time WSOP gold bracelet winner Tom Schneider, three-time bracelet winner, two-time bracelet winner Scott Clements and accomplished tournament pro Dylan Wilkerson.

Clements took the chip lead into the final day, looking to win his third bracelet in a third distinct Omaha variant. His first bracelet win came came in limit Omaha eight-or-better in 2006 and his second in pot-limit Omaha high in 2007. Clements survived to heads-up play with Patterson with the two essentially tied in chips. Patterson held just five more big blinds than Clements, but he was able to widen the gap to a roughly 2-to-1 advantage by the time the final hand arose.

Scott ClementsClements limped on the button and Patterson raised to 150,000 in the big blind. Clements called and the flop brought the KClub Suit10Diamond Suit2Heart Suit and both players checked. The 7Club Suit hit the turn and Patterson checked to Clements, who fired out a bet of 250,000. Patterson check-raised to 800,000 and Clements thought it over briefly before sticking in his entire stack of roughly 1.6 million. Patterson called and turned up the ASpade Suit9Club Suit8Club Suit3Spade Suit for the nut low draw, a straight draw and a nine-high flush draw while Clements opened the KDiamond Suit7Diamond Suit6Club Suit3Club Suit for two pair and club blockers. The 2Club Suit on the river completed Patterson’s superior flush draw and secured the entire pot for him, sending Clements to the rail as the runner up with $167,686.

In addition to the bracelet and the prize money there were also plenty of Card Player Player of the Year points awarded at this final table. Patterson earned 912 points for the win, while Clements scored 760. Fourth-place finisher Jeff Madsen earned 456 at his third final table of the year, moving him into 42nd place in the overall rankings. Ninth-place finisher Dylan Wilkerson earned 76 points at his third final table of 2014, having previously finished runner-up in two World Poker Tour main events this year. He now sits in fifth place in the standings.
