Looking for a great poker getaway this summer? How about experiencing a taste of the Southwest, while trying your luck at some hands of poker. In August, Talking Stick Resort will host the Arizona State Poker Championship. The event is consistently one of the biggest and best-valued poker tournaments in the United States.
Talking Stick Resort, a AAA four-diamond property located in the heart of Scottsdale, Arizona, boasts a 240,000 square-foot casino, 36-hole championship golf course, a rejuvenating spa, six world-class restaurants, and great poker action in its ARENA Poker Room.
The resort will kick off its tenth annual Arizona State Poker Championship August 15-19, 2014. The $1,000 plus $100 no-limit hold’em event boasts a $1 million guarantee, based on 1,100 entries, and the final table will be emceed by 13-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth.
“The ARENA Poker Room at Talking Stick Resort maintains a full tournament schedule throughout the year, but the Arizona State Poker Championship is most definitely our signature event” said Ramon Martinez, director of public relations at Talking Stick Resort. “Now in its tenth year, we have seen it continue to grow and become a major source of pride for our property.”
Last year, Joe Kuether defeated a field of 1,299 entries to pocket $246,161.
This year’s event provides players with 16,000 chips and entrants receive an extra 10,000 bonus chips for only $30. Levels are 40 minutes long. The event features three starting days:
Day 1a: Friday, August 15; 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.
Day 1b: Saturday, August 16; 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.
Day 1c: Sunday, August 17; 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.
The tournament will play down to a 10-handed final table on August 18 and determine a winner on August 19. In addition to cash, winners will also receive trophies and bracelets designed by a renowned Scottsdale jeweler.
Talking Stick is offering super satellites to win seats into the main event of the tenth annual Arizona State Poker Championship. They will take place July 6, July 13, August 10 and August 14 at 11:15 a.m. each day, and players will receive 4,000 starting chips for $110 plus $30. Players may purchase an optional 2,000 tournament bonus chips for $15. For every 10 paid entries, Talking Stick Resort will award one entry valued at $1,000 plus $100 into the Championship.
Also, before the main event, Talking Stick Resort hosts its 2014 State Championship Warm Up Tournaments. The tournaments include a $100 plus $20 tournament on Monday, August 11, a $200 plus $25 event on Tuesday August 12, and a $300 plus $30 tournament on Wednesday, August 13, 2014. All events are no-limit and feature unlimited entries.
The ARENA Poker Room maintains a busy weekly tournament schedule throughout the year. Monday through Friday at 11:15 a.m. it hosts a $70 plus $15 (2,500 chips plus 2,000 bonus chips for $20) event. Monday night at 7:15 p.m. it hosts a $200 plus $35 (10,000 chips plus 3,000 bonus chips for $15) bounty event where $100 of each buy-in is placed in the bounty pool and is awarded when knocking out a player. Tuesday and Wednesday night at 7:15 p.m. it offers a $115 plus $15 (5,000 chips plus 2,500 bonus chips for $10) event.
The Thursday night 7:15 p.m. $200 plus $35 night survivor tournament (12,000 chips) pays the surviving 10 percent of the registered entries and the last player standing gets the remainder of the pot. All tournaments are no-limit hold’em and offer unlimited entries.
Special tournaments also run frequently (check talkingstickresort.com/gaming/poker.aspx for a full list) and include turbo bounty, ladies, big stack, Omaha hi-lo, and Jack and Jill events.
ARENA Poker Room
Talking Stick Resort’s ARENA Poker Room is the largest in the state of Arizona. It is home to 49 poker tables, a giant scoreboard featuring 16 fl at screens and a sports ticker — your home base for the best sports and card action.

Poker games regularly spread include Texas hold’em, Omaha and seven-card stud.
