A Philadelphia man has plead guilty to charges of promoting gambling after it was discovered that he and five other accomplices were running an illegal poker room known as the Runnemede Social Club out of the back of a Curves health club and gym.
Thomas Rand, a 43 year old from Williamstown, Pennsylvania, agreed to probation after serving 270 days in county jail. He joins Ryan Dion, of Blackwood, who also plead guilty and is facing three years of probation with 364 days in county jail.
Three others, who worked as dealers and cashiers have also plead guilty. The sixth has yet to be indicted.
“These defendants operated an old-school gambling club, complete with cash cage, poker tables, and a wide-screen TV for patrons to watch the sports on which they gambled,” said Attorney General John J. Hoffman in a press release. “[The state will] make every effort to remove gambling from the shadows of the black market underworld.”
Rand and Dion were collecting a rake in their club, which housed three poker tables and ran for about eight years. During the raid, police seized $26,000 from the club and players.
