On Friday, a Las Vegas tourist hit a jackpot on a progressive slot machine at MGM that had not been hit in 15 years, according to media reports. MGM confirmed the news.
The prize was $2.4 million.
The man was 66-year-old Walter Misco, who said he only played the machine because his wife told him he should give it a try, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
The machine, known as “Lion’s Share,” gained quite the following over the years as its reputation for stinginess grew. Often lines would form around the machine, and its popularity only increased in recent years as it gained more media attention.
The machine takes $1, $2 and $3 bets, and it does award smaller prizes. It’s just that the grand prize had remained elusive for way longer than anyone anticipated.
All of its companions were phased out over the years. Under Nevada law, the machine couldn’t be replaced until awarding the jackpot.
Slot machines are an integral part of the gaming floor for the Silver State casino industry. They account for roughly 60 percent of total gaming revenue.
In 2013, Nevada casinos won $11.14 billion from gamblers.
