Cambodia is looking at allowing locals to gamble in the country’s casinos.
It may sound strange to those within the United States, where it feels like casinos are public grounds in the sense that everyone of legal age is welcome (as long as you aren’t a cheat), but if you are a resident of Cambodia you really can’t currently gamble at the casinos there.
Only visitors to the country can.
According to WorldCasinoDirectory.com, Cambodia has 26 casinos, spread across 11 cities.
Ros Phirun, spokesman for the Ministry of Economy and Finance’s gaming and casino department, told the Penh Phnom Post:
“We have thought about Vietnam [passing legislation to let its locals gamble]," he said. “Gambling nowadays is a worldwide industry, not just in one country or two. It is an international industry. So now we too have to internationalize the gambling industry. But in order to do that, we have to get the laws in Cambodia finished.”
In Singapore, citizens and permanent residents must pay a S$100 ($80) daily levy to enter the casinos, or S$2,000 for an annual pass, according to Businessweek.
Vietnam is looking at implementing something similar to Singapore.
