One of Iowa’s riverboat casinos has started its long journey to an Illinois shipyard to either be sold or dismantled and salvaged, the Des Moines Register reported.
Mike’s Inc., an Illinois marine business, bought the structure. The previous owner of the riverboat casino was Penn National Gaming.
Belle of Sioux City LP—a subsidiary of Penn National Gaming—filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May in federal bankruptcy court in Des Moines.
The former Argosy riverboat casino left its dock in Sioux City thanks to being closed by state gambling regulators in July. The casino had to close because the state said that it wasn’t partnered with a state-sanctioned non-profit organization, as mandated by law.
There was a court battle to keep the casino open, but the operators lost.
City Manager Bob Padmore said the area likely will be converted to a green space after the riverboat casino is gone, according to Omaha.com.
Iowa still has more than a dozen riverboat casinos and racinos.
The existing gambling facilities in Iowa generate gaming revenue of more than $1.4 billion annually, according to the American Gaming Association.
