Mike Leah has emerged victorious from a field of 68 entries in the 2014 World Series of Poker Asia Pacific $25,000 AUD no-limit hold’em high roller. For the win he earned his first gold bracelet and the $600,000 AUD ($527,500 USD) first-place prize.
“I’m obviously very happy. I don’t know if it has sunk in yet. I’ve been trying to accomplish this goal for so long. There is just relief that I’ve finally done it.”
With more than $2 million in cashes, four titles and seven final-table finishes in 2014, the 40-year-old Canadian poker pro is having one of the most impressive years put together by a player in recent years. If it weren’t for the absolutely unbelievable year that Daniel Colman is having, Leah would be the leader in the Card Player Player of the Year race.
For this most recent win Leah earned 432 POY points, climbing from third place in the overall standings to second behind Colman with 4,606 points. Leah is now 764 points behind Colman.
Leah came into the final table of this event with a huge chip lead. In fact, going into six-handed play Leah had more chips than his five opponents combined. By the time it got down to heads-up play against David Yan, however, Leah held only a 3.3 million to 1.7 million chip lead. The two played 30 hands heads-up, and by the time the final hand arose Leah held a roughly 9-to-1 lead.
On the final hand Leah moved all-in from the button with the K7 and Yan called all-in for his last 600,000 with K4. The board ran out 10953A and Leah’s hand held to secure him the pot and the title. Yan earned $316,522 for his runner-up finish.
