Authorities in North Carolina say they have busted a $20-million gambling ring that stretched across the eastern part of the state, according to reporting from wral.com.

The raids began in May and now seizures have reached that massive sum, police said.

Nearly 200 store and restaurant owners from more than 40 towns, including Raleigh, Rocky Mount and Roanoke Rapids, have been caught in the middle of the federal investigation and had their businesses raided by agents in the past several months.

Not everyone is pleased with the work done by law enforcement.

“To me, they just legally robbed me,” Richard Oakley, owner of The Train Station, a bar and restaurant in Cary, told WRAL. “Eight guys walking around with guns and badges, smashing – literally – a machine open in the middle of my dining room. It was insanity.”

Oakley, and presumably others, contend that the video gambling machines are legal under a loophole in the state’s “sweepstakes” law. Altogether, hundreds of thousands of dollars have been seized, including in one cash from a tip jar.
