Police in Dubai heroically busted a card game in a parking lot near a bus stop that featured bets of Dh50 ($13 USD). A pair of Bangladeshi workers admitted to the activity.
According to Gulf News, the duo were calling on pedestrians to place bets on the makeshift game that was set up on an ironing board.
The men pleaded guilty in front of the Dubai Court of First Instance on Monday. The reportedly pleaded for a lenient punishment and forgiveness.
Here’s what a policeman told prosecutors:
“My colleague and I headed to the location and found a group of men from different nationalities standing in a circle. We stood between the crowds of people and discovered that the suspects had organised a gambling game. [One of the men] was running the game cards on an ironing table meanwhile [the other man] was calling on the public to participate for Dh50 each. The duo was convincing the gamblers to play and the winner wins double his bet [Dh100] if he guesses the right card. Most of the gamblers ran away but we arrested the main defendants."
The men said they were trying to get extra cash since they are paid starvation wages.
A decision in the case will come in mid-January.
