Atlantic City’s bankrupt Trump Taj Mahal will close its poker room indefinitely this Sunday, the poker room told Card Player on Friday. The casino itself has been struggling financially and still faces the possibility of closing its doors.
With 48 tables, the Taj’s poker room is the second largest in Atlantic City behind the Borgata and its more than 80 tables. After the Taj room is no more, Atlantic City will have five poker rooms and 204 tables left, according to figures from PokerAtlas.
The Taj has been featured in a number of movies, including the poker cult classic “Rounders,” in which stars Matt Damon and Edward Norton play a session in the casino’s poker room. The poker room is considered one of the game’s iconic places to play.
Just this week, news broke that the federal government was hitting the Taj with a record $10 million penalty for anti-money laundering failures, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The casino’s anti-money-laundering program lacked safeguards for monitoring and reporting on suspicious activity, the government said. The Taj admitted to the shortcomings. Poker itself has not been connected to the casino’s anti-money-laundering violations.
