As February winds down some big changes to the leaderboard in the 2015 Card Player Player of the Year race, sponsored by CarbonPoker. Here is a look at the events that made the largest impact over the past seven days:
Venetian DeepStack Extravaganza I Main Event
The Venetian DeepStack Extravaganza I $1,600 no-limit hold’em main event sported a $750,000 guarantee this year, a mark that was easily surpassed when 585 total entries were made. As a result the final prize pool swelled to $851,760.
In the end William Sturiano came out on top, taking home $178,870 and the title. Sturiano defeated Joe Kuether heads-up for the title. Kuether earned $109,877 and 700 POY points at his fourth final table of 2015.
With $1,177,722 in year-to-date earnings and 2,140 POY points to his name already this year Kuether has now moved into 2nd place in the overall standings. This was his second largest score of the year, with his biggest cash coming from a runner-up finish in the $25,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em high roller at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure in January for $1,050,000.
Heartland Poker Tour Golden Gates Main Event
Jose Montes emerged victorious from a 761-entry field to win the 2015 Heartland Poker Tour Golden Gates $1,650 no-limit hold’em main event. For the win he earned the $240,523 first-place prize and his second title of the year, having won the World Series of Poker Circuit Choctaw main event for $352,669 just a month earlier.
In addition to the title and the money the poker pro based out of Bronx, New York also earned 912 Card Player Player of the Year points. As a result he climbed into fifth place in the overall POY standings with 1,872 points so far and year-to-date earnings of $593,192.
Montes had to overcome a star-studded final table that included the likes of WSOP Circuit Cherokee main event winner Jacob Bazeley (5th – $49,221) and World Poker Tour season X player of the year winner Joe Serock (2nd – $148,895).
