Jason Somerville Snags PokerStars Deal

WSOP Bracelet Winner Inks New Endorsement Agreement

Despite shedding many of its sponsored players over recent months, PokerStars and poker pro Jason Somerville have reached a deal to make him an ambassador for the site.

Somerville was previously with Nevada-based poker site Ultimate Poker. That site closed down last year due to insufficient traffic.

The New York native has $5.4 million in lifetime tournament winnings, including a World Series of Poker bracelet in 2011. Somerville has been extremely active on social media and producing poker-related content on other platforms.

“One of things I’ve learned in the last few years is that these kinds of relationships are co-promotion partnerships,” Somerville said in a statement. “They’re not like the old days where a poker site would put a patch on a player, and they would be a walking billboard. That no longer has a return on the investment for the poker site.”

His signing is especially significant given that PokerStars has fewer Americans on its Team Pro roster due to the company not currently operating in the United States.

Due to talent, results and a lot of hard work with creating poker content, Somerville is an exception to the general rule that most players should follow: Don’t bank on being a sponsored player, at least not right not. U.S. online poker needs to grow.
