While on a business trip, 32-year-old Aaron Wallace decided on taking a slight detour through Las Vegas in order to play some poker. The Kentucky native who now lives in Indiana took the last seat in a $175 buy-in single-table satellite and won it, earning himself a $1,000 seat into the pot-limit Omaha event.
Wallace was just one of 1,293 players in the event, the largest non-hold’em field in poker history. After three days of action, he was the last man standing, earning $226,985, the lion’s share of the $1,163,700 prize pool.
“I have two kids at home,” Wallace said. “And one on the way. I was torn, because I actually missed my daughter’s birthday to play in this. She turned three on Thursday, so this is for my family. It’s going to get us in a better spot.”
There were nine nations represented at the final two tables with five players from the United States, two from Canada and one each from Hungary, Luxembourg, Germany, Iran, Finland, South Georgia and Greece.
The runner-up was German poker pro Marko Neumann, who finished fifth in the $10,000 buy-in pot-limit Omaha event last year. Other notables who made a deep run in the event included Jacob Bazeley (20th), Greg Merson (29th), Allen Kessler (31st), Michael Katz (47th), Matt Brady (49th) and Andrew Brown (50th).
