A church in New Jersey with roughly 4,000 members is suing its former accountant over claims that he embezzled $5 million from it from 2007 until 2014 and spent a lot of it at casinos, according to Courthouse News Service.
“In 2007, [Donald] Gridiron began writing unauthorized checks to himself and third parties drawn on [Agape Family Worship Center]‘s bank accounts, and sending unauthorized wire transfers to himself from AFWC’s bank accounts,” the complaint reportedly reads.
Gridiron, also once an accountant for the Western States Golf Association, allegedly transferred church funds to that group. The reason isn’t known.
He is also facing ongoing criminal charges in California for wire fraud.
The church, which says Gridiron confessed to them, might have a hard time receiving all of the money back, as Gridiron filed for bankruptcy last year in the Golden State.
