Former Scottish professional footballer Dominic Matteo recently declared for bankruptcy, due in large part to huge gambling losses, according to a report this week from The Sentinel.
His gambling debts reportedly are more than £1 million.
During his 17-year career he played for Liverpool, Sunderland, Leeds United, Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City.
“With drinking or womanizing, you’d be in the papers but betting is one of the few vices footballers can have without it getting around,” he has said of his gambling, according to the Mirror. “I gambled stupid amounts [on horses]," he has also admitted.
The 41-year-old’s bankruptcy reportedly is still at an early stage and it is being determined how many creditors there are and precisely how much is owed.
Among footballers in England, Matteo is not alone in his addiction. An article titled “The Top 10 Players With the Worst Gambling Addictions in English Football History” done by 90min.com put Matteo at no. 7.
According to Matteo, gambling addiction is an epidemic within English football.
