A poker game at a cigar bar in Weston, Florida, a suburban community in Broward County, was raided by law enforcement on Wednesday, resulting in two arrests, according to a report from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
Police were in bulletproof vests when arresting the two organizers. Players were not arrested.
The bust apparently happened because residents were complaining about the poker.
Michael Kieran McGuinness, 60, and Daniel Frederick Husley, 38, have been accused of keeping a gambling house. A week-long undercover “investigation” allegedly captured evidence of McGuinness setting up a poker table and dealing cards. He allegedly works for a company called Bar Poker Pros LLC. Husley is the owner of the Water Cigar Bar.
Both men have been released from the Broward County jail after posting bond.
McGuinness said he will be suing the county over the arrest. He says the game was for charity.
“Credit the B.S.O Crime Suppression Team for making the arrests,” a reporter for WPLG-10 Miami said for some reason. WPLG was there to film the raid.
Florida has history of cracking down hard on poker games at bars, regardless of how small the stakes are. In 2012, a bar poker league endured what it called “tyrannical [law] enforcement” after police in riot gear raided their game with a $0 buy-in.
Florida poker players aren’t alone. A recent court ruling in Wisconsin said that low-stakes bar poker games with no rake are technically illegal under state law, much to the dismay of poker enthusiasts.
