Jan Fisher (second from right) and Card Player Cruise's Scuba Diving GroupRoyal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas arrived in Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas early on the morning of Sept. 8, giving the Card Player Poker Tour passengers a chance to explore yet another beautiful stop in the Caribbean.

At just 32 square miles, the tiny island of St. Thomas is the gateway to the U.S. Virgin Islands and home to only 55,000 people. As tourism is the only industry on the island there is never a shortage of adventures for disembarking cruise ship passengers.

Card Player Cruises partner Linda Johnson organized a special group outing, which whisked travelers away in open-air safari busses to the breathtaking Secret Harbour Resort.

Passengers enjoyed the brightly colored red blossoms hung throughout the trees on the arbor-lined roads as they passed by the waterfront shopping area, including the Royal Dane Mall and the Turkish Grande Bazaar. Further up the road, the busses slowly inched down the famous Donkey Hill, known for it’s steep incline and narrow passageway, and listened to a knowledgeable tour guide point out important sights such as the fire department, public and Montessori schools, the armory and churches.

The tour arrived at Secret Harbour to find beach chairs already set up and cold rum punch waiting at the bar. Iguanas napped in the trees while cruisers basked in the early afternoon sun, soaked in the clear blue water, glimpsed fish while snorkeling and went further toward the horizon in kayaks.

While Johnson’s group was floating in the salty water, Card Player Cruises partner Jan Fisher took a small group on a scuba diving excursion.

Aside from the water and shore-side adventures, passengers could enjoy a cable car ride with stunning views of the island or visit the open-air market and chat with local vendors selling their wares.

Back on the ship, the final table of the CPPT Caribbean Cruise $1,100 no-limit hold’em main events awaits. The final nine players, led by Florida’s Hong Lin and Card Player’s own Barry Shulman, will return to the felt Sept. 10 and play down to a winner.
