Daily fantasy sports site DraftKings, a Boston-based startup company with a billion-dollar valuation, announced this week that it will be holding real-money contests on the League of Legends World Championships that start on Oct. 1. It’s part of its partnership with six leading eSports organizations.
LoL is a multiplayer, real-time strategy video game. The LoL World Championships have been held annually since 2011 and have grown in popularity during that time. It awards a $1 million top prize. DraftKings will be awarding $25,000 in prizes to its players, the company said.
It will be the company’s first foray into taking action on eSports. AlphaDraft and Vulcun have already began contests on eSports, according to VentureBeat.
DraftKings and FanDuel are the largest DFS sites in the world.
“eSports is one of the world’s most popular spectator sports, and we are excited to introduce League of Legends to our industry-leading fantasy platform as a way to bring fans worldwide closer to the game,” said Matt Kalish, CRO and Co-Founder of DraftKings.
“Our partnerships with Cloud 9, TSM, CLG, SK Gaming, compLexity Gaming and Mousesports show our strong commitment to the eSports space, and our desire to work with top teams and players to support and help grow this booming space.”
The DFS industry has largely focused on traditional sports up until now, with the NFL being the major source of revenue for the industry. The DFS industry is expected to grow to $2.5 billion by 2020, according to Eilers Research.
