California-based tech giant Yahoo is in talks to buy Major League Gaming, a New York-based eSports organization, for an undisclosed price, according to media reports. The possible transaction comes as other firms in the daily fantasy sports space are positioning themselves to take action on the eSports industry.
Yahoo, which is vying for market share in a DFS space led by DraftKings and FanDuel, has long been a leader in online fantasy sports and could strengthen its offerings as the industry consolidates. FanDuel recently announced the acquisition of leading fantasy eSports platform AlphaDraft, which followed DraftKings announcing that it partnered with six leading eSports organizations and will soon be taking action on the games.
According to FanDuel, eSports was a $612 million market last year and 13 percent of all live stream viewers are watching eSports. FanDuel predicted that by 2017 the number of eSports fans will come close to that of American football. The potential for the gambling industry is there.
Other tech giants like Google and Amazon have made plays into the world of eSports. Amazon bought Twitch in 2014 for $1 billion. Twitch has become a popular site for poker players interested in live streaming sessions or other poker-related content.
According to GameSpot.com, MLG is building a 15,000-seat stadium on Hengqin Island, which is off the coast of Macau, the world’s largest gambling hub in terms of casino revenue.
