PartyPoker and the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers have ended their marketing partnership, according to a report from philly.com. The online poker site’s deal with the New Jersey Devils, which are owned by the same group as the 76ers, remains intact.
The poker site’s deal with the two teams was the first of its kind (pairing up with an online gambling operator) for a major U.S.-based professional sports teams. It was forged in 2014.
The partnership was originally supposed to be for multiple years.
Bwin.Party Digital Entertainment, the parent company of PartyPoker, has an operating partnership with the Borgata casino in Atlantic City. That casino is owned by Las Vegas-based MGM Resorts International and Boyd Gaming.
Bwin was recently sold to GVC Holdings for roughly $1.62 billion. GVC is an Isle of Man-based sports betting and gaming company. There is speculation that GVC could sell PartyPoker to Amaya Gaming, the parent company of PokerStars and Full Tilt.
According to Philly.com, the Sixers were the first NBA team to sign a sponsorship deal with DraftKings, one of the leading daily fantasy sports sites.
