The federal government has given the green light to an electronic bingo business from the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas. The tribe wants to operate the bingo on its reservation east of Livingston, which is roughly 75 months northeast of Houston.
According to the Lufkin Daily News, the U.S. Department of Interior and the National Indian Gaming Commission said this week that the tribe is allowed to offer the games.
The tribe closed its casino back in 2002 after just nine months in business. Texas wanted it shut down.
Just this week, the Texas Lottery Commission indicated that it is “interested to learn about” online gambling, despite the state legislature being strongly opposed to any expansion of gambling.
Tribal gaming is the United State is regulated by the federal government. Tribal gaming had gross gaming revenue of $28.5 billion in 2014, the most ever for the industry. Though, it was a small 1.5-percent increase compared to 2013.
Texas has one tribal casino, the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino Hotel located on tribal land near the town of Eagle Pass, close to the Mexican border.
The only non-tribal gambling present in Texas is the lottery, pari-mutuel wagering, and some charitable gaming that includes bingo and raffles.
