A prominent Las Vegas gambler won $2,457,200 when the Kansas City Royals won the World Series on Sunday, according to a report from the Las Vegas Sun.
Dave Oancea, better known as “Vegas Dave,” took home nearly $2.5 million thanks to confidence in the Royals since the beginning of the season. He placed a $100,000 future bet in Week 1 when the odds were 30-1 and bet the team all the way down to 8-1, the report said.
It had been three decades since the last title for the team.
“The total bets were spread across seven casinos, including the Wynn, the Mirage and Tuscany," Oancea said. “They offered me a guaranteed million to cash out early, but I just let it ride. It was meant to be. We will never have this experience in baseball again. I have a great understanding of baseball, and this was destiny for the Kansas City Royals to win. Look at what they overcame to win.”
According to the report, it was the largest future bet in history.
The Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino reportedly suffered the brunt of the losses.
Oancea’s historic World Series payout comes not long after he was broke from a gambling addiction.
“I was at rock bottom a few years ago," he said. “My parents weren’t proud of me. I wasn’t proud of me, either. I’d lost their savings, but they never stopped believing in me. So last week they were wearing Kansas City hats and T-shirts, and my dad watched the games with me. Next week, we go looking for houses because I promised them a new one.”
The Nevada sports betting market is up around 14 percent so far this year. Nevada sports books saw $3.9 billion in wagers in all of 2014, winning $227 million. Both totals were all-time highs.
