The 2015 partypoker.net World Poker Tour Montreal no-limit hold’em main event attracted a solid field of 697 entries, each posting the CAD $3,850 buy-in in the hopes of becoming the next WPT champion. In the end that dream could only come true for one player and that was Jared Mahoney. He earned CAD $453,122 ($354,001 USD) and the dramatic WPT Montreal championship belt for the win.

The Boston, MA native also was awarded 1,260 Card Player Player of the Year points for the win, his fourth career live tournament title.

Mahoney outlasted a tough final table of six that featured the likes of 2015 WPT Lucky Hearts Poker Open main event champion Brian Altman (4th – $113,109 USD), recent EPT Barcelona final tablist Rainer Kempe (3rd – $153,078 USD) and 2015 WSOP Circuit Palm Beach Kennel Club main event champion Darryll Fish (2nd – $237,767 USD).

Mahoney came into the six-handed final day as the shortest stack with only 21 big blinds, but was able to survive and accumulate chips. By the time he got heads-up with Darryll Fish he held the chip lead with 11,150,000 to Fish’s 9.7 million. The two battled it out for 36 hands before the final cards of the tournament were dealt.

With blinds of 250,000 – 500,000 Mahoney min-raised to 1 million from the button. Fish then moved all in for 9,625,000 and Mahoney quickly called with the ASpade SuitKClub Suit. Fish was in trouble with the AClub Suit2Diamond Suit. The board ran out AHeart Suit8Diamond Suit7Diamond Suit6Club Suit5Club Suit to secure the pot and the title for Mahoney.

Fish earned the single largest payout of his tournament career ($237,767 USD) for his runner-up finish along with 1,050 Player of the Year points. This was his ninth final table of the year and it was enough to move him into 20th place in the POY standings with 3,126 points and year-to-fate earnings of $649,872. Third-place finisher Rainer Kempe was at his seventh final table of 2015 and climbed to 12th in the rankings with 3,720 points and $920,555 in winnings on the year.
