Online poker is continuing to gain ground in India, as another state in the country is now viewing the game as skill-based and legal.
According to Glaws.in, the Indian state of Nagaland has approved a piece of legislation dubbed the “Nagaland Prohibition of Gambling and Promotion and Regulation of Online Games of Skill.” The process of drafting the rules and regulations is expected to take a few months, the report said.
The approval of the Nagaland bill is expected to lead to more regulated online poker in India. A favorable August court ruling on rummy for real money has led to operators of online poker sites becoming more confident with their respective businesses.
It has been estimated that as many as 500,000 people in India play online poker for real money. The market is estimated at $214 million USD.
In January, poker pro Sam Trickett was signed by a leading Indian poker site.
It’s too early to call it an Indian poker boom, but as a 2011 article from CNN pointed out, that could be on the horizon thanks to the game’s growing popularity in the country of 1.25 billion people.
