A Japanese badminton star will have to sit out the upcoming summer Olympics after falling into hot water for gambling at an illegal casino in Tokyo.
Kento Momota, who is ranked fourth in the world in the sport, won’t be attending the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, according to a report from Reuters. Momota, along with other badminton players, were gambling at a casino that was raided by police.
Casino gambling in Japan is illegal, despite legislative efforts to change the law and bring Las Vegas-style casinos to the island.
Tokyo will be home to the 2020 Olympics, and there was once hope that casinos could be built in time for the summer games, but those legislative efforts are officially off the table for the indefinite future.
