Though there isn’t a massive abundance of gambling available in Finland like there is in America, the activity is pretty popular in the country. According to recent studies, as many as 80 percent of adult Finns gamble at least once a year.
According to Gaming Zion, the average Finn spends 14 Euros per week gambling. Roughly 80 percent of gamblers in the country are lottery players, but the market is driven by the top five percent who are considered high rollers. That five percent reportedly generates roughly 50 percent of the country’s market.
Finland’s home to Las Vegas-style casino gambling is Casino Helsinki, and it’s reportedly the world’s only non-profit casino used to help charities. All profit is used for social services. It’s not open 24/7 every day of the year like casinos in Las Vegas, as it’s closed for eight hours a day and for two days of the year it’s closed completely, but it is a full-scale casino, equipped with a poker room as well.
The nation has a state-controlled online casino monopoly, which generates roughly €1.7 billion in revenue annually. Top international gaming sites are also accessible for Finns, creating a robust market for real-money online casino games.
In addition to peer-to-peer poker, other popular games in Finland include blackjack, roulette and video poker. However, the poker abilities of Finns are known internationally. Even a former Miss Finland has a sharp poker game.
In 2014, Sara Chafak, who represented Finland in the 2012 Miss Universe pageant, ran a hyper-aggressive bluff against well-established poker pro Ronnie Bardah, a move that caught the attention of the entire poker world.
Of course one cannot fail to mention Finnish poker legend Patrik Antonius, who is the biggest winner in the history of online poker. He’s also widely regarded as one of the toughest live poker players the game has ever seen. Ilari Sahamies, Jens Kyllönen, Sami Kelopuro and Juha Helppi are a few other cash game monsters that the country has produced over the years.
